Evening Talk: Gordana Nikolić - Turbulent (Cultural) Politics and Contemporary Cultural Work(ers)

Wednesday 09 December, 6pm, Associates Space

Gordana Nikolić, curator and researcher from Novi Sad (Serbia), has undertaken the Spike Island Accented Residency. Gordana will talk about actual (cultural) politics and the position of art and cultural production in/after the time of “(economic) transition” in Serbia and in the time of “World Economic Crisis”. These ideas will be discussed with reference to various projects and exhibitions Gordana has been involved in:

  • Exception - a research project/exhibition and public talk about the contemporary art scene from Prishtina (Kosovo) that caused significant public and media attention because of the then Kosovo's independence declaration and threats by clerical-fascist organisations that prevented the opening of the exhibition in Belgrade (February 2008)
  • Wealth of Nations - an international exhibition and conference from June 2009 (Novi Sad) about the influence of the economy and finance sector on actual social context and cultural production.

  • For Cultural Politics – Politics of Culture - An initiative from the non-profit art scene in Novi Sad that is fighting for transparency and the (new) cultural politics of the Novi Sad City and Vojvodina Province Government.

Gordana Nikolić has an MA in History of Contemporary Art (Faculty for Philosophy, University of Belgrade) and Media and Art Theory (Interdisciplinary studies, Art University, Belgrade) and is a Phd candidate in the Deptartment for Sociology (Faculty for Philosophy, University of Belgrade). She is running new Deptartment for Film and Video in the Museum of Contemporary Art Vojvodina (Novi Sad) and is a member of the Institute for Flexible Cultures and Technologies – NAPON and of the initiative For Cultural Politics (Novi Sad).
