Contemporary art is normally much more self-conscious than previous art phases have been. Much art in the last few decades has been connected with a certain topic issue or another, such a feminism, gay rights, multiculturalism, the environment, globalization, bioscience and AIDS. These all come readily to mind as subject matter.
Although contemporary art is often faced with a lot of criticism, such as Tracey Emin’s unmade bed, what interests us is this very discussion around it. What is art? If people are talking about it, isn’t that enough?
At Spike Island they exhibit lots of experimental art which they hope will provoke a discussion. If you want to discuss it please get in touch!
This is a fan page for Spike Island, the gallery in Bristol. We are not affiliated with the gallery itself. It exhibits much contemporary art, intending to showcase new talent as well as exhibit plenty of established artists. It stimulates and engages the visitors and hopes to engage with the vibrant local community in Bristol.
If you’re visiting Bristol, why not check out the rest of this vibrant and exciting city? One of the most well-known areas is Clifton, home to the famous Clifton Suspension Bridge which was designed by the engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, joining Clifton across the Avon Gorge to the more rural area of Ashton Court.
Bristol University is one of the most prestigious in the UK, and has halls situated around the city. Many of the oldest halls are all the way in Stoke Bishop, across the downs. Bristol is famous for its many pubs, including the Coronation Tap which is famous for its Exhibition cider, so strong they only serve it in half pints. It is certainly worth visiting, as are the many nightclubs and kebab shops!
This old city is also the home to Banksy, the anonymous graffiti artist who a few years ago had an exhibition at the Bristol museum.
